John Singleton Mosbey is said to have never lost a battle. Mosbey
commanded partisan rangers (free ranging cavalry) who attacked behind
enemy lines and would skeedaddle or disappear like grey ghosts leaving
destruction behind and giving him the name "Grey Ghost". Mosbey's hat
is like Jeb Steuart's but Mosbey's was gray and at times lacked the plume.
One plume is correct for a major, but Mosbey was promoted to Lt. Col. (2
plumes) and finally full colonel (3 plumes).
