This is the authentic style worn by the infamous Danites (Mormon hit

I believe Clint Eastwood modeled his Pale Rider character after Porter
Rockwell, the Mormon Avenging Angel, who killed over 50 men. This
style crown tapered off in popularity by the 1880's, but there is a man
wearing a silver belley colored hat like this in a picnic photo with Custer
taken shortly before his "Last Stand".
